It was 50 years ago, but not now. Chlorine does kill some harmful mico organisms but not all of them--gardia for example, and chlorine itself does damage.
What does tap water contain and What can be done about it?
Until the municipalities change their filtration and disinfection practices, the only recourse you have is to get a good house water filter. Get one for your shower while you are at it...something I didn't think necessary until I started to look into the harmful effects of chlorine fumes.
