The D with a Circle around it is the usual setting for OverDrive.
If you feel you must test this, place your vehicle in D (w/o circle) and drive normally. Once over 45mph, place the shifter in D (circle) and see if it shifts.
This will not do damage to your transmission if you do not bypass OD and hit N or R.
While driving around town, I keep my shifter at D. I only put it in OD if I am on the highway. It prolongs the life of your torque converter because in OD most TCs lock up.
