Since the introduction of the Honda City in the market it has been very successful in keeping its competition with the likes of Ford, GM, Hyundai at bay attributed to the Civic's solid brand value which has made others at the trail playing catch up. Suzuki would like to try to topple down Honda's City with its new Maruti SX4. How good is Maruti? Does it have what it takes to compete with Honda City?

Let's face it not everyone are attracted to the Honda City with its protruding Honda antenna and compared to the Maruti SX4, appearance wise it looks like Angelina Jolie while the City looks more like Dr. Spock but of course Suzuki will not agree with such comparison especially since the ad campaign tagline for the Maruti is "Men are Back". But in fairness to the Maruti, it is sporty and sexy plus it has successfully hidden its hatchback roots.

The SX4 has a nice flat integrated dashboard and sporty touches of chrome everywhere, which adds up to its good looks unfortunately it failed to surpass the hand feel and rich textures found on the City's interiors. But to make up for what it lacks, the SX4 has leather seats, steering remote control airbags, and pockets for bottle holders on all four-doors.

In terms of exterior, it is quite obvious that the SX4 is longer, taller, and bigger. But you know Honda it won't just sit around and wait for competition to stomp over it, the engineers at Honda has made sure that the size of the Civic will not become a disadvantage. Honda's engineers have developed a backseat that can comfortably seat three people despite its being narrower than the SX4.

The SX4 despite its larger size has some drawbacks like for instance the armrest in the back of protrudes into the third person's spine just imagine if sudden brakes are applied that would definitely hurt. And that's not all the tunnel in the flooring of the SX4 does not provide much legroom. It boot also loses out marginally. On the other hand the Civic despite its small size manages to pack in a lot of space with more headroom, legroom not to mention more space for the driver.

In terms of driving performance the City can provide you with the regular 77 bhp or V-Tec powerplant with 100 bhp, which is very much closer to the SX4. The Maruti SX4 is powered by a new M-16 engine, which has one twin overhead cams, a driveby-wire throttle and revs up a healthy 102 bhp compared to Cuty's 77 bhp. The Maruti has also an extra 2 kgm of torque which obviously makes it much faster on the road.

When it comes to accelerating from 0 to 100, the SX4 is the winner but in terms of gear now that is another story. This is because the SX4 seems to lose steam at around 5,000 rpm while the torque curve on the City is by far crispier and linear making it perfectly suitable for city driving. The Honda City has also a more refined engine.

But of course the comparison doesn't end just yet both the City's and SX4's gearbox are good although the SX4 would require for a much firmer hand. On the hand the City as expected is light and easy. Over bumps and undulations the SX4's steering gets jumpy while the Honda City's steering although light to handle feels unsettling at high speeds.

Driving through traffic, the SX4 and the City both scored well however the SX4 leads in terms of ground clearance where the City suffers caused by its low ground clearance. The SX4 with its 16-inch rims and 205 tires provide better grip but so does the City with its ABS. The City wins when it comes to fuel efficiency but in terms of styling and price the SX4 wins it by landslide. Now that we know the advantages of both cars it would be easier to choose which one to buy.

The 1997 Honda Civic comes with 3 different body styles and is very customizable in just about every aspect. As a subcompact car it gets great gas mileage and handles as nimbly as any car offered for the '97 model year. Its closest competitor is the Toyota Corolla which is also the only car that has been in production longer than the Civic itself. The car has come to be known for its reliability and quality of engineering which make it a very rewarding and inexpensive vehicle to own. The Civic makes it hard to say that there is a better car on the market.

Trim packages available for the 1997 Honda Civic include the CX, DX, LX, Si, and HX. CX models are the budget oriented trim package that doesn't have a whole lot in terms of creature comforts. CX models lack power windows and locks, have no AC, but still are as reliable for transportation as any other Civic ever produced. DX models are very basic as well but at least have the option to be outfitted with some power accessories like windows and locks, and could possibly be outfitted with AC. LX models are a very big step up in terms of available features. Standard equipment on LX models include full power accessories, sun roofs, power adjustable driver seats, CD/Cassette players, tilt steering wheels, cruise control, and a lot of other optional features.

HX coupe models are the hatchback option which has been increased in length by 4.3 inches. Most HX models came equipped with the same standard features as the high-end LX and could be customized in a multitude of different ways. Si models could be outfitted the same as the other high-end packages as well and had their own specific engines that were more powerful than the others.

Power trains offered for the 1997 Honda Civic include a 106 horsepower 1.6 liter four cylinder engine which is standard on most all of the Civic models. The HX and LX models come with an optional 115 horsepower 4 cylinder engine, while the Si comes with a 160 horsepower engine.

Fuel economy is where the sub-compact cars tend to excel and the Civic is no exception. Most models are able to produce on average at least 30 mpg. The smaller engines tend to stay in the low to mid 30 mpg range, with larger engines getting slightly less. One area where the 1997 Civic is lacking is road noise, being that interior noise is noticeably louder than that of the Toyota Corolla. Rear entry is also somewhat poor, making it awkward for rear passengers to enter and exit this small car. Oddly however, there actually is a lot of room for rear passengers once they are inside the vehicle.

Dual airbags are standard safety equipment. On certain models like the EX antilock brakes are standard while only offered as optional on LX sedans and EX coupes. Overall the Civic fairs well in crash test ratings for a subcompact car, but are nowhere near the safety offered by a full size sedan.

Consumers on a budget that need a reliable vehicle seriously must consider a Civic. They may not be the most stylish or fully loaded cars, but they offer a reliable form of transportation that is unparalleled by any competitor.

What's the newest prelude year of motor can i put in my 96' Honda Civic Hatchback CX?

I have a 1996 Honda Civic Hatchback CX and i'm looking for a good engine swap. Can a Prelude motor fit right in,or do i have to modify(some cutting) my inside hood? And what year of Prelude motor can i swap in? What parts do i need to swap a Prelude motor in?

I agree with Mike B. The part he left out is that it will leave about 1.5" of clearance between the oil pan and the ground. That means if you hit a rock on the road, you're screwed. But regardless, it is completely possible to fit a h22 in it. Try the engine from an RSX type s. It's a little smaller and packs a helluva punch.

Front tyres. Rear bushes. I'll just say this will leave a VTS standing and is in a different league. The car handles like no other FWD. The engine is a smooth as the BMW m52 motors (but with less bhp).
