Traveling North America in a Mobile Command Center is fun, I ought to know, as I have been doing so for over 6-years now. The other day someone asked where they could find a used mobile command center, perhaps from a city police department, former FEMA unit or even military surplus.
Indeed, I see used units, trade-ins and ads for older command centers, but not often. In Dallas there is the Truck Cowboy that specializes in these things. My unit is a Kibbi, Kibbi.com and I think they might have some leads on used trade-ins, although they primarily make units for the Race Car Crowd. My trailer is a "Trailer Tech Unit" but Featherlight, Kibbi and others make pretty cool units also. I would also recommend the satellite internet folks for those components.
Some people like the Motor Coach Diesel Pusher type-style and it is preferable to many folks, one of my first units was a bus, Prevost, with pop-put sides, I my current one much better. These units make great on-site research labs, as well. Occasionally, I see them in the advertisements.
There is a group called "Bus Conversion Magazine" where folks post such things for sale. I see them in the DuPont Registry sometimes, but I find the prices to be silly and out of realistic range. If you are just looking for a shell, then maybe put an ad at the Sheriff's Association online site?
Regarding the Pusher Type Coaches - I have seen problems with the pushers due to air intakes and issues with sucking debris into the radiator, when driving on dirt roads, or where they throw sand on top during inclement weather. But, I looked at many units before buying mine and retro-fitting it myself. I looked at all the Police and FEMA units, that I could find. The original concept, I think came from a GI Joe Mobile Command Center, as my parents got me for Christmas one year.
You know it may take a little searching around on this for you to find a used mobile command center? Municipalities often sell their surplus at auctions, thus it would have all the racks you need, proper suspension and and electrical system. I use an Onan 7500 Quiet Diesel, and my last one had solar panels, which I recommend, why not use the top of the unit to collect energy?
Think in terms of other uses like "Mobile Office, RV Conversions, Bus Conversions" for other ideas and searching on the Internet for one. I did put a chapter on this in an eBook that I recently wrote: http://www.worldthinktank.net/pdfs/futuretrucktechnologies.pdf
I wish I knew of someone selling their mobile command center, I know that there are very few civilians with these things, I only know of a couple, they contract out with emergency services and fire departments and stuff. An old military unit might be nice, but that would be overkill for you, still military surplus prices sure are a value. If you are searching for a personal mobile command center then you need to keep a watchful eye, as there are not many used ones for sale these days.
