With Holland and Spain to meet in the World Cup final at the Soccer City Stadium in Jo'burg on Sunday, the one thing that can be predicted with certainty is that there will be a new champion added to the most exclusive club in football.

With South American teams dominating up to the quarter-final phase of the tournament, nobody would have dared predict that Holland and Spain would meet in the final. But with both Argentina and Brazil shown the door in the quarter-finals, a European champion was on the cards, especially as the African teams did not justify pre-tournament predictions that foresaw their ascendancy.

The finalists are two extremely talented teams that play an open and attacking brand of football, far removed from the gritty game that has served Italy and Germany so well in the recent past. Holland were pipped at the post on two occasions, in 1974 and 1978, while Spain's best performance prior to this edition has not exceeded a quarter-final entry. Ironically, this year, the two teams had to resort to more grit and ruthlessness, and less flair, en route to the final.

Quite in contrast with "total football", the Dutch have played percentage football, with little expenditure of energy, to boast an all-win record at this World Cup.

Denmark, Japan and Cameroon were more grist to the Dutch mill, in the group stage. Slovakia was more of the same, in the round of 16, and Merwyjk's men faced their first real challenge in the quarter-final when they met Brazil. Down by an early goal, following a defence lapse, Holland were given a life-line in the form of an own goal by Felipe Melo. Melo compounded his error by getting sent off for stamping on Robben, even as the Dutch, now 2-1 up, were cruising to an unlikely win.

Skipper Giovanni van Bronckhorst put Holland ahead of Uruguay with a 35 yarder from the left flank that was arguably the goal of the tournament.

Schneider and Robben then gave individual notice of Dutch masterclass, and despite an injury time fight back from Uruguay, there was only one winner on the day.

Midfielder Mark von Bommel has been Holland's pillar of strength, and along with De Jong, due back from suspension, should direct the course of the match for the Dutch, in the final. Holland will also have back the services of their right back Gregory Van der Wiel, also returning from suspension. In what will probably be Van Bronckhorst's last match for Holland, the skipper will be hoping for an encore of his performance against Uruguay.

 

The pressure of expectation has not told on Spain, joint favourites with Brazil in pre-tournament predictions. Though less than spectacular, Spain have succeeded, in taking rival defennces apart, time and again, during this tournament.

The first match loss to the Swiss proved a blessing in disguise, as it served to quell the ghost of underperformance that has been Spain's bane, in the past. Eschewing flair, for clinical efficiency, Spain have worked their way past obdurate oppositions who seemed set on denying the Spaniards rather than scoring themselves.

Xavi, Xabi Alonso and Sergio Busquets have been the three-pronged midfield support for the prolific David Villa, joint top contender for the Golden Boot, along with Dutchman, Schneider. Pedro, replacing the out of form Torres, in the semi-final, is likely to get another start, following his good showing in the semi-final. But without his hunting partner by him, Villa was not the same force against Germany, and Del Bosque could factor that in his team selection process.

Carles Puyol has led from the front whether as a calming influence, in defence, or as a force to reckon with, in attack.

Both teams come into this match on the back of five consecutive wins.

A key battle will be that between Wesley Schneider -- tied at 5 goals each, with David Villa, in contention for the Golden Boot -- and Sergio Busquets and Xabi Alonso as the protective wall in front of the back line.

For Spain, David Villa will probably come up against Van der Wiel, who missed the Uruguay game through suspension. Van der Wiel might well decide to stick with his right back position in defence, to keep Spain's lone marauder at bay, instead of joining the hounds, on his flank.

Holland should go with Schneider as their lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 formation. With  the return of De Jong and Van der Wiel, the defence looks less vulnerable than it did against Uruguay. Kuyt is likely to get space to exploit on the left, with Schneider, Robben and Van Persie drawing the attention of the Spanish defence.

For Spain, Pedro might find himself out, despite his performance against Germany, to allow Torres to partner Villa. Gerard Pique could be a crucial factor in defence following his great showing in the semi-final. Del Bosque will count on Villa to go for the Golden Boot, to add to his highest scorer tag at Euro 2008, especially as he was denied a strike by the Germans.

I am averse to making a prediction for this game, as it would be a pity to see either team lose. The entry of Holland and Spain into the World Cup final is the best possible thing that could happen, in the interest of world football, which is drifting towards efficiency as opposed to flair, with winning the only thing that matters. Holland dominated an entire decade in the 1970's, without winning football's biggest prize. Spain have displayed the kind of genius one associates with the likes of Brazil with nothing to show for it, except the recent Euro 2008 championship win.

There's no denying that Spain are the more complete side. Let's wait and see who emerge as the better team on the day...

Door Lock

Nothing is more important than the security of your home and your loved ones. One of the most basic things you can do to protect your valuables is to secure your residence with quality door locks. The entry point for the majority of burglaries is through a door because it is the quickest and easiest route in and out of your home.

It may surprise you to learn that most building codes don't require a lock on external doors. Because building codes do not require a minimum standard for door locks, most contractors select locks based on price. Therefore, it is extremely important for you to examine your existing locks to determine whether or not you need an upgrade.

Types of Locks

1. Knob locks - spring latch and dead latch varieties. These locks can be easily picked or forced. They are best used on interior doors, such as bedrooms and bathrooms, or in combination with deadbolts.

2. Deadbolts - many different varieties. These are the most secure kind of lock. They should be used on all exterior doors of your home.

3. Chains - most are attached to the door and frame with short screws. Chains are generally not very thick or strong. They are useful as secondary protection. Do not use as your main method of security.

4. Wedges - rubber or wooden triangle that can be wedged under the door to prevent it from opening more than a few inches. These can be reinforced by inserting two steel pins into the floor behind it. Good as secondary protection, especially on bedroom doors, as they can slow an intruder down.

Deadbolts

Many would-be burglars will move on to another home if they see high-quality deadbolts installed on all your exterior doors. No matter what type of deadbolt you purchase, there are a few key features that every deadbolt should have.

First, make sure that your deadbolt extends at least one inch into the wall. Second, the lock should be made entirely of metal, and there should be no exposed screws on the outside of the door. Finally, to ensure you are purchasing a quality lock, be sure that it has an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Grade 1 classification.

There are two types of deadbolt locks, single cylinder and double cylinder. Single cylinder locks require a keyed entry from the outside but can be locked with a turning knob from the inside.

Double cylinder deadbolts require a key both internally and externally to lock and unlock the door. Double cylinder locks are more secure for doors containing glass or that are located near a window. However, they can create a safety hazard in the event that a quick exit is required. It is a good idea to keep a key in a designated location near the door in case of fire or other emergencies.

Additional Lock Features

Free-spinning Collar - One quarter of home invasions occur when the perpetrator manipulates the lock in some fashion. If an intruder attempts to saw off the bolt, the free-spinning collar makes it difficult for him to get a cut as the bolt spins with every motion. This feature also prevents burglars from removing the bolt with a wrench or vise grips. You can purchase drill-resistant deadbolts as well that contain steel chips within the lock housing that destroy drill bits.

Strike Plates - Strike plates come with every door lock, but not all of them offer security. The strike plate is generally the most vulnerable portion of the entire door lock. The strike plate should be made of a heavy metal and attached to the door frame and stud wall with screws that are at least 3 inches long. The screw holes should be staggered for extra security as this makes it more difficult to split the wood door frame with a heavy impact.

Doors & Door Frames

No matter what kind of lock you select, it can easily become useless if you do not have a sturdy door and door frame.

You should use solid wood core or metal doors for all exterior entries to your home, including doors leading from your garage to the interior of your home. The doors should be at least 1 ¾ inches thick without any glass panels that would allow a thief to reach in and unlock your door from the inside.

It is important to have a durable door frame as well because burglars often employ a technique called "spreading" to enter your home. This involves planting a wedge between the frame and the wall and applying pressure until the wood bows to allow entry.

To protect your home from this kind of forced entry, install 3 to 4 inch screws along the door strip and frame. The screws should penetrate the stud to hold the door frame and door strip securely to the main wall.

The Next Step
Once you have the appropriate door lock installed, the most important thing to remember is to use it! One-third of all home intruders gain access through an unlocked door or window.
