The Honda Prelude is a sports coupe that was offered for sale by Honda from 1978 until 2001. The two-door coupe was produced over five generations, and was replaced by the Honda S2000. The Prelude's competitors in the North American market included the Toyota Celica, Isuzu Impulse, Mitsubishi Eclipse, Ford Probe and Mazda MX-6.
The Honda Prelude has been outfitted with a number of different engine choices over its lifespan. The first generation Prelude (1979 -1982) offered a 1.8 liter four cylinder that produced 75 horsepower. The second generation Prelude (1983 - 1987) featured engine options of 1.8 and 2.0 liter engines, producing 105 and 110 horsepower respectively. The third generation Preludes (1988 - 1991) featured a 2.0 liter engine producing 150 horsepower, while the fourth generation Prelude (1992 - 1996) also utilized a 2.0 liter engine that had a horsepower increase to 160 horsepower. The final generation of the Prelude (1997 - 2001) offered both a 2.0 liter and a 2.2 liter engine choice; the 2.2 liter engine had a horsepower rating of 200 horsepower. All generations of the Prelude were offered with either a manual or automatic transmission option. The final generation of the Prelude had a number of high-tech options, including four wheel steering and variable-valve timing.
The Honda Prelude was available with a long list of features that were typical for vehicles produced during its lifespan. Manual air conditioning on earlier generations, and automatic on later models, was an available option on the Prelude. Power steering, power door locks, and power windows all typical features that should be found on any Honda Prelude for sale. The final generation of the Prelude was offered with high-end options such as leather seating, "Sportshift" transmission, four wheel steering, and anti-lock brakes. The "Sportshift" transmission was an option on the Prelude is a four speed automatic transmission that also allows the driver to manually change gears in a fashion similar to the Porsche "tiptronic" transmission.
The Honda Prelude was a vehicle that was praised at the time of its production, and also continually improved over its lifespan. The Prelude was named to Car and Driver Magazine's "Ten Best" list 10 times over its production run. The U.S. government's crash test ratings for the Prelude improved dramatically over it lifespan; the first generation Prelude received only one star in frontal crash testing, but by the fifth generation the vehicle was receiving five star ratings in front crash testing. The general consensus on the Prelude was that it is a well-built, sporty coupe that gave the driver great performance at a budget price.

Honda -- All Car History Volume 13
Honda is the world's largest engine maker, producing more than 14 million internal combustion engines every year. Honda's began building motorbikes but the S500 2-door roadster featuring a 492cc engine saw the company move into car production in an innovative way in the 1960s.
The highly acclaimed Civic and Accord saw Honda make rapid international progress. Today, the company makes everything from cars and motorbikes, robots, jets and jet engines, to lawn and garden equipment. Honda's current crop of cars includes the Accord, CR-V, Civic, FR-V, Jazz, Legend and S2000.
HONDA HISTORY
In 1948 Honda's founder, Soichiro Honda, started a new company: Honda Motor Co. They soon came up with the "batabata", a motorised bicycle named after the sound the engine made which became a huge hit across Japan. Later, Honda's most popular model, the Dream, could be spotted all over the Japanese islands.
Honda introduced its first car in 1957, the N360. In 1958, the American Honda Company was created. In 1972 Honda entered the American market with the small fuel efficient Civic - just as the energy crisis was hitting economies. In 1986 Honda introduced a luxury line of cars and in 2007 Honda announced plans to launch low-priced hybrids.
