One of the scariest problems that occurs on Jeep Cherokees is know as death wobble. Death Wobble is when the front tires start to shake violently. Think of a shopping cart wheel that flutters and having two of them on the front of your Jeep.

Death wobble is very common on lifted Jeeps but can occur on stock vehicle as well. The root cause is the instability of the inverted Y steering linkage on the Jeep.

When every thing is working well, this type of steering and suspension works very well. However, when things go wrong, the shake can be very scary and can potentially damaging.

The axle is located side to side by the track bar. The joint on the frame end is made like a tie rod and is susceptible to damage due to corrosion and over extension. Just a very sight amount of wear in this joint can allow the axle to move side to side and can lead to the death wobble shake.

Another base cause of death wobble is the caster angle. The caster angle changes slightly when the XJ Cherokee is lifted due to the unequal length control arms. This angle can be corrected with shims. Very often death wobble can be eliminated by altering the caster angle. More or less caster than the factory recommended settings may be required for your suspension so you may have to experiment.

Worn or soft control arm bushings can lead to caster angle changes and therefore lead to death wobble. Replacing worn bushings are retrofitting polyurethane bushings can correct your steering angles and sometimes eliminate the death wobble.

Sometimes the source of death wobble can be very elusive. Some cases have been reported where the mount for the track bar has become slightly lose either due to loose bolts or metal fatigue and death wobble occurs. This one can be particularly hard to find as every thing may look fine in a visual inspection of the suspension.

To check the track bar and it mounting points, have an assistant move the steering wheel back and forth while you observe the track bar and its mounting points. Also, by placing a finger on the tire and on the fender flare note any side to side movement of the axle when the wheels are turned. Often you can feel the axle body of the truck move slightly before the wheel starts to turn if there is wear in the track bar or is mounts.

Another possible source of difficulty are the steering box bolts. The bolts that pass through the steering box and secure it to the frame also pass through an aluminum spacer. Often this spacer corrodes and keeps the bolts form turning. Even if they feel tight with a wrench, they may not be holding the box tight to the frame. Also, this area of the frame is highly stressed by off road driving and larger tires and can break. Any looseness in the steering box mounts can contribute to death wobble.

If all else fails in trying to correct a death wobble situation, you can try replacing the steering stabilizer. However, in doing so you are only masking the problem not curing it.

In an emergency situation where you must drive a XJ that is experiencing death wobble there are a few tricks that you can try. The first is to toe out the steering by adjusting the tie rod. This will wear the tires but will also put pressure on the suspension and keep it in place so it does not shake making the Jeep drivable. Reducing the air pressure in the tires to trail levels can also eliminate death wobble although I am not sure why.

Death wobble can be a very scary problem and can be very frustrating to solve. Often it is only intermittent and happens at the most inopportune times. If these common solutions do not cure your death wobble see my website for a more thorough list of things to check.

1: Delta Bike Hitch Locking Fork Mount

Delta Bike Hitch Locking Fork Mount

Works like a charm!

These fork mount clamps work like a charm. I ordered two to transport two bikes in my pickup truck. Got them mounted to a 2x10 piece of wood that was sitting in the backyard. I can throw the whole thing in my truck bed and remove with ease. Once you get the clamp adjusted to your fork, there's no need to adjust it again. It is pretty tight when you loosen it to remove your bike. I have to get it a few love taps to loosen it from the fork once I have the clamp in the open position. Highly recommend this product for the price and quality. I would've loved to spend more on a Yakima clamp but I saved A LOT by going this route.

========================================================================

Delta Fork Mount

Excellent fork mount. Used it as part of a home-made car top carrier for my tandem. Drove over 700 miles without a problem.

========================================================================

Works well enough

Certainly mounts securely to my truck bedrails. However the axle compression mechanism was a little off. It works fine for my purposes, but I wouldnt trust it to hold a $3k mountain bike from thieves in downtown (city).

If all you are trying to do is transport a few bikes for the family or friends from the garage to the bike path, trails whatever this should be more than adequate. If you rely on your bike fork carrier for theft protection, invest in something from a larger company like Yakima or Thule.

========================================================================

Does the Job

The hitch does what it is suppose to. At first it looked kind of flimsy and I thought that my fork will slip out but the fork is locked in pretty tight. In my set up, I mounted the hitch to a 2x6 board which I lay in the truck bed. That way, I can remove the 2x6 and have use of the full bed without somthing sticking out. You will also need some way to secure the back wheel or it will swing around when you take sharp corners in your truck. I got a ratcheting cargo bar which I layed across the top of my back wheel to keep it in place and secured it with a velcro tye.

Only complaint I have is that the spacer tab (the tab next to the quick release) sticks and hard to move back and forth. I tried greasing that part and it helped some.

I recently looked at the Delta bike hitch pro2 at a bike shop, it costs $10 more but seems lot more sturdy and the mechanism seems to be lot smoother.

=======================================================================

Good Investment

I purchased two of these bike mounts so that I could get me and my sons MTB's mounted in the back of my pick up. The mechanism isn't the smoothest but it open up wide enough that I don't have to mess around with unscrewing it to get the bikes off. I mounted them onto the toolbox in the back of my truck and that worked great for my sons bike. My bike has the disc brakes so I had to use a piese of dee[ strut to mount to the tool box first to get me the clearance that I needed. If you compare the price to Thule or Yakima you'll realize that you can buy 2 or 3 of these for the same price. So far I think its been a great product.

=======================================================================

Price and quality can't be beat

I bought this because it is lockable, it looked like it would mount perfectly to the utili-track system in my Nissan Frontier and it's inexpensive compared to the competitors. Everything works great. It's very sturdy and with my mountain bike mounted I can close the tailgate with a couple of inches to spare. It can be hard to open if you don't adjust it correctly, but that means it's more secure. I just throw a screwdriver in the truck bed in case I need to pry it open.

Has anyone ever seen, or tried to mount Military MDV tires on a modern Jeep Wrangler?

I was wondering how that would work. I know if you could find the wheels to mate with the military wheels, you would also have to have spacers.

I think it would look cool. Would still be great off-road tires for a Jeep, but it would probably slow you down on the highway.

I am also wondering if it would buy you any extra mpg?
I am sorry, said that wrong, NDT's.

I am sure you could get them to fit, but why? They certainly arent the greatest tire out there. Are you going for a retro Wrangler? If you want a military look, find a set of Goodyears from a Hmmwv. They will perform better off road.

If you go with the 15" size, depending on the year of the wrangler you could go with a stock XJ wheel that looks military like. They are usually white and look abit like these (http://image.motortrend.com/f/auto-review/jeep-jt-an-exercise-in-what-a-jeep-pickup-could-be/6390909+w600+cr1+re0+ar1/jeep-jt-concept-side-view.jpg) but with "slots" in them.

If you go with the Hmmwv type, get the stock Hmmwv wheels and have them recentered/redrilled for the correct bolt pattern.
