When buying an GM second-generation FBody car, from 1970 - 1981 there are a few items to look at for authenticity, general condition and things to be expected. This guide is meant to help a buyer identify the right car for them, not to over-pay and to help spot common problems which might assist in the decision making process. This is not a guide to buying a fully restored car or collector item.
Many Camaro and Firebirds on the used market are heavily modified and often are made to look like a higher model then they actually are: plain Camaro dressed up like an RS, or Z28 or a Firebird with Trans Am or Formula parts. First look at the VIN of the car, and find an online decoder, that will tell you the model regardless of how the car looks. Do not buy car based on an owner story or that it looks like a specific or rare model. Engine size can also be determined by the VIN. This will only indicate the engine originally installed in the car, not necessarily what is in the car now.
A few quick points, big block Chevy engines have the small water host that connects the intake manifold to the water pump, small blocks do not. The physical size of the valve covers is noticeably different. The engine stamped ID on the front of the block can be decoded to show the CID. Pontiac blocks, on the side of the block in front of the drivers side motor mount is the CID. This number is actually cast into the block, such as 350, 400, 455. Oldsmobile motors in the Trans Ams and Firebirds have an oil fill pipe directly in the front part of the intake manifold. This is at least 6-8 inches tall. This is easy to spot.
Common engine oversites or miss-understandings. Later 70's cars had smaller engines to comply with emissions requirements, an FBody car with a large motor in the late seventies stock is not very common. These are mostly found in the Firebird and Trans Am, with the Olds 403 delivered and sold in California, and the Pontiac 400 sold out of state. For engines that have been swapped, be sure emissions equipment is still on the engine if that is required in your state or region. Educate yourself on the model and year you are looking at to be sure when you see an actual car for sale, you can spot a fake or possible someone trying to be deceiving.
Rust in these cars is common in a few places, look in these areas and if the rust is acceptable to you, then you know that much more. Under the trunk lid, near the hinges water will pool up and rust. The bottom of the doors, where water/salt and snow are kicked up from the tires is a common rust area. Behind the rear tires, again water, salt and snow. Under the rear window chrome trim, at the very bottom, look here or pear under the chrome. If water has gotten in the car, it will smell and the lowest point is behind the driver and passenger seats, water will puddle up and rust.
Sagging doors is a common problem and should be expected as well as broken door handles. These are normal and need to be addressed by all owners. Worn window felt on the window guides will cause the door glass to have vertical scratches in it, also common and to be expected.
Hacked up wiring harness. For some reason either radio installs, poorly placed speakers under the dash, or some equipment removed from the engine compartment will leave the harness in bad shape. Just be aware of this and ensure all key systems are functioning when you inspect the car. Things such as lights, wipers, horn, turn-signals, etc.
Obvious items for concern or that will make you look closer are drivetrain items usually. Again, know the model information is key to making a good buying decision. Some things to look for: HEI ignitions in the wrong year cars, 4 speed cars that are now automatics, non-posi rear-end in a Trans Am, miss-matched decals on a Camaro or Firebird for the year of the car. Interior parts or styles that are not correct for the year. These can all be indicators of a non-original car, valuable original parts missing, accident damage, fire or someone trying to make the car something it isn't.
Hopefully these tips have been help and there is much more FBody car information, with correct pictures and details at: http://www.fbodygallery.com.

Our new car seat doesn't come with a canopy, where can I find one to keep the sun out of my LO's eyes?
Combi used to make one, but every website I go to says they don't have it in stock, so maybe there are no more. A sunshade on the window - whether suction cup or stick on - has to be placed lower on my car's window b/c my car has some strange tint stuff on the inside top of the window. So a canopy would work best - any suggestions?
babies r us or buy buy baby are good place to find them. Every so often I see them at walmart.
