Finding a 1967 Chevelle SS for sale is a dream that many muscle car enthusiasts hold near and dear to their hearts. While the '67 Chevelle SS is by no means a perfect car, it's a wonderful specimen that boasts enough personality to make its flaws endearing.

There were kinks present in the first several years of the Chevelle SS, particularly in the way that the car handled, and driving at top speeds exacerbated these issues. What set the 1967 Chevelle SS for sale apart from those that had come before it were the improvements in this area.

These most basic of these changes was the upgrade from the standard rayon two-ply 7.75x14 tires to low profile F70X14s with nylon belts. Chevy also reconfigured the steering system including the wheel so that grip and steering response were dramatically improved.

The feel in the car when one changes direction, especially at high speed, is what separates the 1967 Chevelle SS most from the 1964-1966 Chevelle SSs. The designers also improved braking with the new front disc brakes that were available as an option along with the purposeful 14-inch slotted wheels that were included standard.

Enthusiasts should note that it is possible to customize the 1964-1966 Chevelle SSs to include similar handling improvements. However, the 1967 Chevelle SS provides a particular handling that one cannot easily match with a simple upgrade, and this is part of the vehicle's allure.

For the 1967 Chevelle SS for sale, Chevrolet included the same standard transmission, a 3-speed manual. However, most SS buyers opted for the 4-speed transmission, which was available at the time for an additional $105. Precise numbers of 4-speed and 3-speed sales are not available, but it does seem that the non-standard 4-speed is much more prevalent. Chevrolet also offered a 2-speed Powerglide transmission as well as a 3-speed Turbo Hydra-matic option but both of these are rare from today's perspective.

Chevrolet also included a padded instrument panel and an energy-absorbing steering column due to U.S. safety regulations that the government had enacted the year before. The dashboard was essentially the same one included with the three previous models, which is very bland compared to other muscle cars of the time. For this reason, the dashboard is one of the most popular aspects of interior customization. Chevy did offer an optional tachometer this model year, which they positioned to the left of the steering wheel.

Visually the 1967 Chevelle SS for sale was not remarkably different from the '66 model. Differences include a reworked bumper and grille that one would not notice without side-by-side comparison. Chevy also included a blackout tail panel, and despite demand for the contrary, the hood louvers remained nonfunctional.

Under the hood, Chevy once again included the 396 cubic-inch V8 engine that hammers out 325 horsepower stock. The L34 engine upgrade was still available for approximately $100, but this engine provided 10 horsepower less than the L34 offered a year earlier. This was because of a GM edict against any car other than the Corvette producing more than one horsepower per 10 pounds of curb weight. The 375-horsepower L78 engine option was still available as a dealer-installed conversion, but no longer publicized. Perhaps for that reason, Chevy sold approximately only 600 of these conversions.

With prices starting at $2,800 for the coupe and $3,000 for the ragtop, the Chevelle SS was only a couple hundred dollars more than other Malibu models. It's difficult to imagine how anyone passed up a 1967 Chevelle for sale back then.

Chevelles For Sale

The Chevelle is a mid-sized automobile that the Chevrolet division of General Motors manufactured from the 1964 to 1977 model years. As part of the popular A-body lineup that included the reintroduction of the El Camino, Chevelles for sale during the muscle car era were a smash hit. As well as providing the basis for the El Camino, GM also used the Chevelle as the basis for the Monte Carlo that they would introduce in 1970.

Chevrolet intended the first-generation Chevelles for sale between 1963 and 1972 to compete directly with the popular Ford Fairlane model that was a similar size. During the design phase, Chevy promoted the vehicle with Nova nameplates, but the model would eventually take on the Chevelle name, and the Nova would become another of the A-body models. During this period, GM also used the Chevelle as a basis for the Beaumont, a hard to find re-trimmed Chevelle sold only in Canada by Pontiac.

There was a lot of variety in the Chevelles for sale during this period. In addition to the standard Chevelles, there were also 4-door hardtop sedans, called Sport Sedans, which Chevy manufactured from 1964 to 1972. Chevy also offered a 2-door station wagon variant between 1964 and 1965. This was part of a value segment called the Chevelle 300 series.

From 1964 to 1972, GM manufactured the 2-door hardtop coupes dubbed Sport Coupes. They manufactured the 4-door sedans and the 4-door wagons throughout the entire first generation run. There were also Chevelles for sale with exclusive nameplates such as the Concours, the Concours Estate, Greenbrier, Nomad, and the Nomad custom, which was only available in 1968.

All of the cars in the A-body series included a muscle car offering, these were the SS models, or in the case of the El Camino an SS trim. The Chevelle SS was the first of these, Chevy's first real entry into the highly competitive muscle car market. In 1966, Chevy introduced a complete redesign of the frame used in the two earlier models. This aspect didn't change much in terms of performance, but it did keep the Chevelle in line with the style of the times, the Coke-bottle body shape that had become prevalent among mid-1960s American cars.

The Yenko Chevelles are an interesting footnote in automotive history for collectors. During this period, GM had a restriction that none of their divisions could put an engine with a displacement over 400 cubic inches in a mid-size car. However, this was a common request from muscle car consumers, so Don Yenko, who operated a Chevy dealership outside Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, found a loophole involving special equipment fleet orders that allowed him to custom order Chevelles with 425 horsepower engines. Once other dealers became aware of this loophole, they began doing the same thing, and these supercars took on their own names, such as the Berger and the Sunico.

The most extensive redesign in the ten-year history of the Chevelle came in 1973, and marked the start of the vehicles second generation. In 1977, the Laguna S3 coupe replaced the SS as the performance edition of the Chevelle. At this point the Malibu, which had been a mid-tier offering, became the top-of-the-line trim as the Malibu Classic. The standard base model was simply the Chevelle as it had been. However, toward the end of this run, Chevrolet's lineup had grown too unwieldy, and as part of a company-wide downsizing, Chevy merged all mid-size offerings into the Malibu model. Unfortunately, the popularity GM had built with the Chevelle did not survive into the Malibu-only years.

Chevrolet Monte Carlo production to end in June?

General Motors has confirmed production of its Monte Carlo coupe will end early this summer. The last orders will be taken in early May, and assembly at Canada's Oshawa plant will stop on June 20th.

Thanks to a model update and new V8 engine, sales of the front-wheel-drive Monte Carlo were up slightly in 2006, but fell significantly early this year (down 60 percent in January). GM expects the 2008 Malibu to cut into potential Monte Carlo sales further, making now a good time to axe the coupe.

While GM hasn't commented on the future of the nameplate, product chief Bob Lutz said in March GM's new rear-wheel-drive Zeta platform would be used for a new Monte Carlo, along with the upcoming Camaro, Impala, GTO, and Buick Statesman (now believed to be on hold). At the time, Lutz also said a new El Camino was possible — a proposal that is gaining steam, according to recent reports.

they are just stopping production so they can change over the plant from the w-body to the new zeta platform. the large coupe will be built off that platform once everything is back up and running.
the new platform is rwd again also.

BOAL: Looking back at the 2009-10 prep sports year, from A to Z
It was another exceptional year in local high school sports, one of the most significant in recent memory. But even though student-athletes are taking summer school classes and the fall season will be here before we know it, the accomplishments of area programs during the past year are still fresh in our minds.
